ATLETICO ARE MAD FOR £20M VARDY

- BY JAMES SHARPE

ATLETICO MADRID want Jamie Vardy to replace Barcelona-bound Antoine Griezmann.

The Europa League winners’ boss Diego Simeone is a long-term admirer of Vardy (left), once describing him as “the kind of powerful striker Atletico need”.

Atleti are considering a £20million bid, but that might not be enough to persuade the Foxes to do business.

Although the speedy England striker is 31, his importance to Leicester cannot be overstated. He hit 20 Premier League goals this past season, despite not being blessed with the best of service.

The volley he scored at West Brom was named Match of the Day’s goal of the season. And having started professional football later than most players, Vardy probably still has many miles left on the clock.

An in-form forward like Vardy should be worth much more than £20m in a current market where defenders such as Kyle Walker and Virgil van Dijk were sold for £50m and £75m respectively.
