YOUNG: USE FINAL MISERY TO COME BACK STRONGER

- BY DAVID McDONNELL

ASHLEY YOUNG says Manchester United must use their FA Cup defeat as a motivation to come back stronger next season.

Jose Mourinho’s side ended the season without a trophy after losing 1-0 to Chelsea at Wembley, although defender Young said the Reds should not be too downcast.

“I think we have to come back stronger, stronger in the league, stronger in the FA Cup, stronger in the League Cup, stronger in the Champions League,” said the England wing-back.

“We want to be fighting on all fronts. We have the summer now to look forward to and then we will come back and prepare in the pre-season.

“We wanted to win things, win titles, but it wasn’t meant to be. We finished second in the Premier League but in a different season with the points we collected we would have won the league. But it wasn’t meant to be and today is disappointing. It will take a while to sink in but we now have the summer to prepare for next term.”

Young claimed United were the better team at Wembley on Saturday but admitted they did not create enough clear-cut chances to rescue the game after Eden Hazard had put Chelsea in front.

“It’s disappointing, starting the game like we did and coming away with nothing,” Young said.

“You can see how the players reacted after the game, we didn’t feel like we should have lost.

“We didn’t have clear-cut chances but on a different day there were chances we could have taken and we could have gone on and won the game.

“In the second half they were on the back foot but we couldn’t get the goal and we’re disappointed with that.

“There’s excitement (for the World Cup) but right now I’m really disappointed and it’s going to be very hard to shake off.”
