Jose handed £250m to rebuild stale Reds after barren season

- BY DAVID McDONNELL

JOSE MOURINHO will embark on a £250million-plus summer rebuild in the wake of Manchester United’s trophyless season.

The Reds’ 1-0 FA Cup Final defeat to Chelsea ensured Mourinho’s side finished the campaign empty-handed.

With local rivals Manchester City having strolled to the Premier League title and arch-enemies Liverpool

aiming to win the Champions League on Saturday, the pressure is on Mourinho to deliver a major trophy next term.

The United boss has informed executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward of his summer targets, which include Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld, while he is also keen on Shakhtar Donetsk’s Fred, Napoli’s Jorginho and Nice’s Jean-Michael Seri in midfield.

United are also weighing up a move for out-of-favour Real Madrid forward Gareth Bale (above), while a deal for Juventus fullback Alex Sandro is close.

Mourinho wants at least five new faces this summer, with half-a-dozen players heading for the exit.

Daley Blind, Matteo Darmian, Luke Shaw and Anthony Martial (inset) are set to be offloaded, with Marouane Fellaini poised to leave for free and Michael Carrick becoming a coach.

Mourinho, 55, signed a new two-year deal in January, with a further year’s option, but is under huge pressure to deliver a first Premier League title to United since 2013.

And if they find themselves trailing in the title race again next term, his position at Old Trafford will be under serious threat.
