Toffees still sweet on Silva

- BY DAVID MADDOCK

MARCO SILVA will sit down with Everton chiefs this week to thrash out a deal that could see him become the club’s new manager.

The Portuguese boss, 40, will meet the Toffees’ new director of football Marcel Brands in the hope of getting a contract rubberstamped.

Complications around the deal have arisen from Silva’s former club Watford making an official complaint over a potential tapping up by Everton when he was still in charge at Vicarage Road.

Silva remains the Toffees’ No.1 target, but with an FA inquiry into Everton’s conduct still possible, they want to proceed carefully.

And that could see Brands sound out other candidates, with former Goodison midfielder Mikel Arteta emerging as an intriguing candidate after he came close to being offered the Arsenal job.

Former PSV Eindhoven man Brands was appointed director of football at Goodison Park last week. His first job is to complete the task of appointing a new boss, and ensuring they can work together.
