BILL Turnbull has told how his beloved bees are proving the perfect distraction as he battles cancer.

The ex-BBC Breakfast TV legend, 62, said he seeks solace in his hives after being diagnosed with prostate cancer.

He said: “Anything that’s a distraction is good therapy. I go and stand and look at them flying in and out. I have all the hives down the bottom of my garden.

“I had seven hives going into the winter and I have got six now. A lot of people lost a lot of their bees over the winter.”

Another obsession – Wycombe Wanderers FC – has also kept Bill preoccupied. The team have just secured promotion to League One

He said: “I do a handful of games a season now, but when I do, it’s such good fun and I can forget about things for a couple of hours.” The Classic FM radio presenter revealed in March that he had prostate cancer which had then spread to his bones. Bill spoke at the Chelsea Flower Show to highlight the importance of the work of the Bees for Development charity. The TV host, who has three grown-up children, is being treated at the Royal Marsden, a specialist cancer treatment hospital in West London. He found out he had the disease in November and has undergone keyhole kidney operations, hormone injections and chemotherapy. But the cancer has spread to his legs, hips, pelvis and ribs.
