Drizzle.. then sizzle
Bank hol temp may top 30C after storms
THE bank holiday weekend will start with downpours for most today... before turning into a scorcher tomorrow.
Forecasters say temperatures could top 30C when the rain clears.
It could even be the hottest late May bank holiday on record, beating the 32.8C hit one Monday in Horsham, Surrey, in 1944.
It will be warmest in the South East but, while hot, the rest of the UK faces unsettled conditions.
Met Office forecaster Martin Young said: “There is a 50/50 chance we may see the warmest day of the year so far towards the end of the weekend.” The hottest day this year was on April 19 in St James Park, Central London, when the mercury hit 29.1C.
But before it heats up, motorists looking to get away must contend with rain and thunderstorms. There will be lots of cloud and heavy showers or longer spells of rain for the Midlands, Wales and northern England through today. It will be drier in the South East.
But tomorrow will be largely sunny for most, though there’s the risk of a sharp shower or two for central and southern areas.
Sunday will be sunny for many in northern and eastern parts, although there will be thundery showers again for central and southern portions of Britain.
Met Office chief meteorologist Andy Page added: “There is a risk of potentially severe thunderstorms during the weekend.”
