Tottenham boss wins spending war with Levy.. and will now demand huge war chest to splash out on summer targets
MAURICIO POCHETTINO has won his spending battle with Spurs chairman Daniel Levy after signing a new five-year deal worth £42.5million.
The Argentine will now step up plans to land (right) Manchester United’s Anthony Martial, Ajax centreback Matthijs de Ligt and Fulham rising star Ryan Sessegnon. Pochettino, who has led Spurs into three successive Champions League campaigns, said: “I am honoured to have signed a new long-term contract as we approach one of the most significant periods in
the club’s history and be the manager that will lead this team into our new world-class stadium.”
Pochettino, whose staff have also signed new deals, had raised concerns about his future after the final game of the season – an epic 5-4 win over Leicester.
He questioned the ambition of Levy and the club’s owner Joe Lewis but the new deal ends fears among Spurs fans that the man who has transformed the club could defect to a European rival.
Pochettino is now set to make significant changes this summer to raise funds and reshape his squad in readiness for a move into Tottenham’s new stadium in September.
He said: “Daniel and I have spoken at length share the same philosophies to achieve long-term, sustainable success.”
As revealed by Mirror Football yesterday, Manchester United have made an approach for star defender Toby Alderweireld with the club willing to listen to offers.
Left-back Danny Rose, midfielder Mousa Dembele and striker Fernando Llorente are also available for transfer.
