Remand letter told of being ‘up creek without a paddle’
SIDNEY Cugullere told family he was “up the creek without a paddle” before being jailed for 13 years, a prison letter reveals.
He was on remand in HMP Wandsworth in 1986 after being charged with trying to rob a building society in Woodbridge, Suffolk.
In the letter to his brother Reg, Cugullere, then 60, wrote: “I am well in myself and things are much the same, nothing much in the way of news regarding moving yet. I really don’t know what to say, it looks like I’m up the creek without a paddle.”
Putting a brave face on, he added: “I don’t want any family upsets over any of this. I can only hope even at this late stage something goes right.
“Time is going by fairly good and the way I see it the time is not so far distant when I start getting involved in this parole business. I’ll say ‘ta-ta’ for now and don’t worry, I’m fine!” Cugullere was later jailed for 13 years. He returned home to Walworth, South East London, and died in 2005.
