SO BRILLIANT, BUT JUST NOT GOODE ENOUGH FOR EDDIE

- BY ALEX SPINK

Exeter 10 Saracens 27

ALEX GOODE will be in Africa next month when England play their three Test series against the Springboks.

Quite right too given his electrifying performance in Saracens’ third Premiership final win in four years.

Only Goode (left) will not be playing for Eddie Jones’ team. He will be helping to build a school in Malawi.

The fullback Jones will not pick had a hand in all four Saracens tries to cap a campaign in which he made more metres with ball in hand than any Premiership player.

“Simply brilliant,” waxed Sarries boss Mark McCall. “That was his bestever performance in a final. He took his game to a different level. He was extraordinarily good.”

With Anthony Watson injured and Mike Brown shunted to the wing, England have a vacancy at 15.

Elliot Daly started there yesterday and Danny Cipriani has also been told fullback should be his position.

Everyone it seems is part of the conversation except Goode, who now has four Premiership titles, two European Cups – and just one England start in three years. “What more he has to do I don’t know,” added McCall.

“He can only do what he’s done, play brilliantly.” Goode says he cannot comment on what Jones sees and admits he does not even know what dates England are playing the Boks.

“I’ll watch them if I’m around,” said the 30-year-old, whose near telepathic understanding with Owen Farrell was the feature of this final.

“But mum has a charity, she’s built 11 schools in Malawi and has been saying for years I should go out there. I finally have time and decided to go out, give back a bit and perhaps be the person my mum hopes I’ll be one day.”
