Grenfell hero saved 9 from high-rise fire

- BY AMY-CLARE MARTIN

A BRAVE fireman has told how he saved nine people from Grenfell Tower.

Aldo Diana fears lessons will not be learnt from the fire, which killed 72 people.

The crew manager said: “I can’t stand the politics side of it – people saying, ‘We’ll learn from this.’

“They always say it, and never do. They never learn, and it happens again.”

Diana, 55, spoke ahead of an ITV show marking the first anniversary of the West London fire, on June 14. He rescued victims for seven hours, while wearing 50lb of breathing gear.

He told Radio Times: “It was very hard, down many flights of stairs, in the dark, almost out of oxygen.

“You find it in yourself to do it. We got them out.”

Grenfell: The First 24 hours is on ITV on June 6.
