May stick over abortion unfair
I hope that very soon women in Northern Ireland have the same right to end unwanted pregnancies as they do in the rest of the United Kingdom and, following last week’s referendum, the Republic of Ireland.
But to use the issue as a stick with which to beat Theresa May is wrong.
And to say she should enforce laws simply to prove her feminist credentials is deeply unfair. I’m no fan of Theresa May. And I’m certainly no fan of people who deny women the right to make their own decision on their bodies.
But whether abortion becomes legal in Northern Ireland is the business of the Northern Ireland Assembly and the Northern Irish people.
So the sooner the Assembly can function again and this issue can be democratically decided, the better.
