Today’s photo shows Queen Mary with the Tory Home Secretary Sir William Joynson-Hicks at the grand opening of the Great West Road by King George V. The road, today’s A4, cost £1 million and was built to by-pass the notoriously congested Brentford High Street. Keen to take advantage of the good communication provided by the new thoroughfare, businesses and factories sprang up in the Art Deco style, giving us what is now known as Brentford’s Golden Mile.
