Today’s photo from the Mirror archives shows Kenya’s first democratically elected president, Jomo Kenyatta, with justice minister Tom Mboya at a press conference at London’s Cumberland Hotel during the Kenya Constitutional Conference of 1963. Kenya gained full independence from Britain on June 1, 1964, after a long anti-colonial campaign which had been led by Kenyatta.
