Today’s picture shows Pinnington Road in Gorton, Manchester, decked with flags and bunting for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. Tens of thousands of street parties were held around the country to celebrate the historic occasion, while millions of people crammed into friends and neighbours’ front rooms to watch events unfold on television. An earlier announcement that the ceremony was to be televised had led to a sharp increase in the sales of TV sets, which were very much a luxury item back in 1953.
