TIME’S UP FOR GOLF’S SNAILS

- BY NEIL McLEMAN

GOLFERS will face one-shot penalties for slow play on every hole at the Shot Clock Masters in Austria, starting tomorrow.

A buggy will follow each group at the Diamond Country Club near Vienna and time every shot.

Players will be allowed 50sec for the first approach shot, chip or putt in a group – including a tee-shot on a par-three – then 40 seconds for tee shots on other holes and the second or third shots in a group.

Players will get a one-shot penalty for each bad time incurred and these will be shown as a red card on the leaderboard.

Former Masters champ Bernhard Langer (above) took so long over shots that playing partner Lee Trevino once said: “He was clean-shaven when we teed off.”
