Pellegrini hinted at the battle he faces during a talk this week back in Chile.
“The challenge with West Ham is spectacular,” he said. “I’ll force the owners to form a competitive team because they are rich, but careful with money.
“We are trying to get the owners to loosen up to make an important investment and bring the players we need. The idea is to sign a great figure because that will help convince other players.”
Pellegrini was signed amid a blaze of grand declarations, including a pledge from co-owner David Gold that West Ham will “probably spend more money in this window than we’ve spent in any window in the past”.
West Ham wrapped up the free transfer capture of full-back Ryan Fredericks from Fulham yesterday, but it was a deal which had been in the pipeline long before Pellegrini’s arrival.
