Tory Brexit is a rail disaster
Jez taunts PM & Davis may revolt
TORY Brexit policy was facing a new crisis last night – with Jeremy Corbyn comparing it to the shambles on the railways.
Theresa May’s latest proposal to solve the customs issue after withdrawal could be published today.
Brexit minister David Davis suggested the PM may have to sack him if he fails to support her idea.
Mr Corbyn tore into the PM, saying she had “delivered more delays and more cancellations” than the troubled Northern Rail franchise.
He said at Prime Minister’s Questions yesterday: “The Government’s white paper is delayed, its customs proposals have been cancelled and it has ripped up its timetable – just like our shambolic, privatised railways. Which will last longer, the Northern rail franchise or her premiership?” Mrs May is proposing a customs backstop – aimed at avoiding a hard border in Northern Ireland. It would be a time-limited arrangement under which the UK would remain in parts of the customs union. Mr Davis told the Royal United Services Institute think-tank last night: “I suspect it will be fairly decisive tomorrow.”
Asked if he could stay in his job if the Government’s proposals did not have his approval, Mr Davis said: “That’s a question, I think, for the Prime Minister, to be honest.”
Earlier, Mr Corbyn repeatedly refused to rule out a second Brexit referendum, leaving some Labour Brexit-supporting MPs dismayed.
