He can’t just abandon ship

-

Hugely rich Vijay Mallya, whose business empire includes Kingfisher beer, has been ordered to pay overdue salaries to the crew of his super yacht Indian Empress.

I’ve previously told how the £67million vessel has been impounded in Malta, where a court has now ruled that Mallya must pay more than £200,000 in backdated salaries to 15 of his crew.

The case was taken by the Londonbased seafarers union Nautilus International.

“We would always prefer for matters to be resolved before they reach court, and for seafarers to get what they are owed without needing a legal judgment to enforce their rights,” said Nautilus strategic organiser Danny McGowan.

Mr Mallya, 52, is currently fighting legal action to extradite him from Britain to India to face charges of money laundering, which he denies.
