Welcome to the Channel Highlands...
A CHANNEL Island is preparing to consider legalising cannabis.
Alderney’s parliament will this week debate the “production, consumption, licensing and criminalisation” of the drug.
Plans include scrapping penalties for possessing and dealing cannabis; and the island becoming a major producer for medicinal purposes.
Alderney’s mild climate and remote location are said to offer good conditions for growing the plant.
Campaigners say the moves would boost the island’s economy and attract more tourists.
Andrew Eggleston, chairman of the Alderney Chamber of Commerce, said it was a historic opportunity to “steal a march” on other places.
