Rupert: I lost film roles for coming out

- BY NICOLA METHVEN TV Editor

RUPERT Everett blasted Hollywood for treating gay actors as “second-class citizens” and claimed he was barred by studios.

The My Best Friend’s Wedding star, 59, said he lost roles after coming out.

“There were three or four big films that the director wanted me in and that I was blocked from, just for being gay,” Everett said. “That does absolutely happen.”

He branded the film industry as “aggressively heterosexual” and said he was “constantly on the back foot as a gay actor”.

Everett took up writing to find work and he wrote, directed and stars in The Happy Prince, as Oscar Wilde in exile. It opens in London on Friday and nationwide a week later.
