Spanish in crisis after boss axed
SPAIN skipper Sergio Ramos called for unity after the shock sacking of coach Julen Lopetegui.
The 51-year-old was dismissed on the eve of the World Cup for agreeing to become Real Madrid manager after the tournament.
Lopetegui (above) had overseen a 20-match unbeaten run since taking
over after Euro 2016, but Spanish FA chief Luis Rubiales swung the axe. Ramos (left) sought to limit the damage, tweeting a passionate rallying cry, along with an image of the Spain crest. “We are the selection, we represent a shield, some colours, a hobby, a country.
“Responsibility and commitment are with you and for you. Yesterday, today and tomorrow, together.”
Ex-Bolton and Real defender Fernando Hierro has been put in charge of the team for the tournament.
He said: “We have no time to feel sorry for ourselves or think about other things. Our objective is to fight for a World Cup.”
Lopetegui agreed a three-year deal with Real, despite signing a new contract with Spain only 21 days earlier. He gave the Spanish FA just five minutes’ notice before Real announced his appointment.
