Captain Bobby Moore was arrested after being accused of stealing a £600 bracelet from a hotel shop in Bogota, Colombia, on the eve of the finals in Mexico. Moore was held for four days, but never charged.

ARGENTINA, 1994

Diego Maradona was sent home from the finals after the first game, when traces of performanc­e-enhancing stimulant ephedrine were revealed by a test. “They’ve (FIFA) cut my legs off,” he said.

BRAZIL, 1998 Ronaldo’s name was missing from the teamsheet ahead of the 1998 final against hosts France, but was soon dramatical­ly updated with the 21-year-old reinstated.
