Rash of new blood to the head is key..

-

ENGLAND found a way to win where Germany, Brazil and Argentina all stumbled in their opening games, so let’s not sell them short.

Harry Kane was the hero, but it was the arrival of Marcus Rashford (above) from the bench that injected urgency and turned the tide back in their favour when England appeared to be running out of steam.

Rashford’s energy pushed Tunisia back, just when they looked like holding out for a draw – and he deserves to start against Panama on Sunday.

When he runs at defenders, Rashford’s quick feet and directness makes defenders nervous and their natural instinct is to retreat.

Yes, England deserved to win for their persistence – although against better quality opposition they cannot afford to miss chance after chance, as they did in the first half.

Yes, Kane should have been awarded at least two penalties for rugby tackles in the box at corners which were missed by the referee and, inexplicably, by the VAR officials.

And, yes, Kane’s first two goals at a major tournament will give him bags of confidence as England’s talisman.

But the penalty Kyle Walker conceded – a dubious decision, admittedly – demonstrates why I had reservations about using him as a centre-half.

I like Walker, and he’s in my starting XI for England every time. But to get the most out of him, I feel he’s a full-back or a wing-back whose pace is a fantastic asset.

That’s a puzzle England coach Gareth Southgate will have to solve further down the track.

But for now, England are entitled to their celebrations.

They could even clinch qualification for the knockout phase on Sunday – and then we’ll see if they are still learning to fly... or if this team has already found its wings.
