Our photograph shows Princess Diana cradling her newborn son, William, with husband Prince Charles as they leave St Mary’s Hospital in London. Prince William, second in line to the throne, was born 36 years ago today at 9.03pm and weighed 7lb 1oz. Hundreds waited outside the hospital to catch a glimpse of the new royal baby, while thousands of others gathered outside Buckingham Palace, where the birth was formally announced. The prince was the first member of the Royal Family to be born in a hospital.
