I thought I was going to die, then I saw this foot kick it in the head CASADI SCHROEDER ON BRAD, LEFT, SAVING HER

A HEROIC husband saved his wife from being mauled to death by a black bear by punching and kicking it until it let go of her.

Brad Schroeder, 33, ran to Casadi’s aid as the animal sank its teeth into her leg.

She had been trying to warn others in their campsite after it woke the pair up trying to claw through their cabin door.

Casadi, 33, said: “He was biting me so deep, it felt like it was to the bone. I thought I was going to die.

“I spoke to Jesus at that moment and said, ‘I am ready to go.’ The next thing I saw was this bare foot kick the bear right into his head. It was my husband.”

The mum of three had been guest speaking at a remote Christian summer camp at Jeannette Lake in Meadow Lake Provincial Park, Saskatchewan.

After being woken up, she and pastor Brad were unable to raise the alarm by phone as they had no signal, so Casadi followed the bear to warn others.

She said: “There were kids in a tent on the way to the camp kitchen. I thought if he was hungry they weren’t safe.

“I was keeping a good distance from the bear. When I took a blind corner at the kitchen, I saw the bear looking in the window. He saw me and turned around. I wasn’t scared at that point. I knew bear attacks were uncommon.”

But it suddenly charged. Casadi said: “In what felt like the blink of an eye he was right in front of me. He started running at me really fast. I felt his teeth sink into my leg. I was so shocked I began yelling at the top of my lungs.”

Brad, who saw the June 10 attack from the cabin window, raced over and struck the bear as it gnawed on his wife’s leg.

He said: “In a situation like that you don’t have time to think, you just run. All I wanted to do was get that bear off her.”

The animal released Casadi. She was pulled to safety by the occupants of a nearby cabin, who called an ambulance.

Brad ran to their cabin to make sure their three children, aged two, six and eight, were safely locked inside.

An ambulance arrived at the camp an hour later and took Casadi to hospital, where she needed 34 staples in her leg. The mum, of Lanigan in the Canadian province, said: “The doctor told me my injuries were the best-case scenario.”

Conservation officials said the bear was put down over rabies fears after tests confirmed it was the attacker.
