This is Lance Corporal James Charles Walford, or Uncle Jim to us, who was a teacher at Goldthorpe Junior Boys School for many years after the Second World War.
He died in 1975 and never spoke of his war experience. The family suspected he worked at Bletchley Park and this was confirmed recently in the book Lorenz by Captain Jerry Roberts.
Jim was a wheel setter on the Lorenz machine helping to decipher Hilter’s code. The many people who served at Bletchley Park mostly died without speaking of their experiences and got little recognition. They deserve more. Alan Green and siblings, South Yorks
