FORMER world darts champion Ted “The Count” Hankey has been declared bankrupt.

The star player, 50, has struggled to qualify for major tournaments after winning his world titles in 2000 and 2009.

His game also suffered after he had a stroke live on stage in 2012.

Hankey’s bankruptcy order was made at a London court in June by HM Revenue and Customs, it emerged yesterday.

Just days later he was left devastated by the death of his dad. Hankey tweeted: “It’s with heavy heart that I have to announce that my hero passed away last week, my dad. RIP Ted Hankey senior. I’m broken, love you dad xxx”

The father of three refused to speak about his financial troubles at his £200,000 home in Telford, Shrops. But in a recent interview he spoke about narrowly failing to qualify for the BDO World Championships this year.

Hankey said: “I had six months to get to Lakeside and I missed out by one point… I couldn’t believe it, but you have to take the rough with the smooth.

“Ultimately, I only have myself to blame. It feels like I have had a devil looking up on me with some of the luck I’ve had, but that’s life.”
