HUGE DEMO AGAINST VISIT
Poll says May’s failed UK with soft stance on ‘bullying’ leader
NOT SO SPECIAL Theresa May and Trump yesterday THERESA May has let the country down by failing to stand up to Donald Trump’s bullying, a Mirror poll reveals. The exclusive survey, taken on the day of the president’s visit, also makes for grim reading on the state of the special relationship.
And it shows voters do not believe Trump is a good ally to this country.
While the public is divided on Mrs May’s decision to invite Trump to the UK, a clear majority believe she should have taken a tougher stance.
The poll found 54% of voters, including 41% of Tories, said the PM was letting people down by failing to stand up to Trump.
A clear majority – 53% – also say Trump is not a good ally to the UK and does not have our best interests at heart.
Despite his outbursts, most people believe Mrs May was right to invite the President to the UK, with 49% in favour.
A small majority also think it is right that Trump got to have tea with the Queen at Windsor Castle yesterday afternoon.
Mrs May can take comfort that an overwhelming majority dislike the idea of Boris Johnson becoming prime minister. Trump’s endorsement of the former Foreign Secretary is not shared by voters, with 60% (including 53% of Tories) disagreeing with the president’s verdict and only 24% backing Mr Johnson for the top job.
