1,300 Poundworld workers to be axed amid closures

-

TROUBLE Poundworld NEARLY 1,300 workers at collapsed chain Poundworld are to be axed in a wave of store closures.

Administrators Deloitte said a further 80 branches will shut the weekend after next.

It comes on top of 25 due to close tomorrow with 242 workers losing their jobs. The move will leave Poundworld with 230 branches.

Deloitte insisted that it was still in discussions with interested parties about a possible rescue of what is left of Poundworld. It said the talks “will continue to progress” in the coming days.

Joint administrator Clare Boardman said they “remain hopeful that a sale for part, or parts, of the business can still happen”. But she added: “It has not been possible to sell the business as a whole.”

Poundworld has its distribution centre and head office in Normanton, West Yorks, where 100 people have already been made redundant.
