CLIVE King, author of children’s classic Stig of the Dump, has died aged 94.

He passed away on July 10 at home in Norfolk and is survived by his widow Penny and three children.

His most memorable book was published in 1963 and tells of a bored lad who encounters a caveman on the Downs in Kent.

Stig went on to be loved by millions of youngsters and has twice been adapted for TV. Francesca Dow, of Penguin Random House Children’s, said: “We are sad to hear of Clive’s passing. This year our Stig is 55 but feels as fresh today as it did in 1963.” Clive, who was born in Richmond, Surrey, served in the Royal Navy during the Second World War. He began writing in 1958 and penned some 20 books while working for the British Council. Stig has sold more than two million copies.
