KERBER SO DESPERATE FOR CROWN

- FROM NEIL MCLEMAN

COMEBACK queens Serena Williams and Angelique Kerber will collide on Centre Court today in front of royalty.

The American superstar will be seeking her eighth Wimbledon title in only her 14th match back from maternity leave as she seeks to equal Margaret Court’s record of 24 Grand Slam titles.

But the German is also rebuilding her career after beating Williams to win the 2016 Australian Open title and replacing her as world No.1.

Kerber (below) struggled in the limelight of top spot last year as she failed to win a tournament and fell out of the world’s top 20.

She hired Jo Konta’s former coach Wim Fissette in November and will now seek revenge for losing to Williams in the 2016 Wimbledon final.

“I think it is a completely new match – I think we both learned a lot,” Kerber said. “She’s coming back. For me also, I’m coming back from 2017.

“I’m really proud to be back in the Wimbledon final after especially last year where things weren’t like I was expecting.

“I think learned so many things also about me, about how I am.

“I know what is really important in life, what is not and what you have to be focusing on.

“Serena is one of the best players in the world. We had so many great matches in the last few years. To see her back, it’s great.”

Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle and Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton will be among the crowd on Centre Court.

“For sure, it’s really special,” Kerber said. “I know it will be a full house there.

“The atmosphere will be amazing. I’m looking forward to have the feeling again.”
