Our front page asked, “Should hanging be stopped?” after the execution of Ruth Ellis, who killed lover David Blakely. MPs voted against suspending the death penalty but there was support for Ellis, the last woman hanged in Britain.
27 YEARS AGO (1991)
Our troops withdrew from the north-west of Iraq as Operation Haven, relocating 450,000 Iraqi Kurds, ended. They fled to southern Turkey after Saddam Hussein put down an uprising.
2 YEARS AGO (2016)
Mohamed Lahouaiej-Bouhlel drove a 19-tonne truck into a crowd of 30,000 people who were celebrating Bastille Day on the Promenade des Anglais in Nice, France, killing 86 and injuring 458. Police shot the Tunisian-born terrorist dead immediately after the atrocity.
