Delighted Dai takes the bronze

- BY ALEX SPINK

DAI GREENE marked his first appearance for Britain in five years by powering to a bronze medal.

The former world 400m hurdles champion has endured an injury-ravaged spell but showed his class at London’s Olympic Stadium.

“This is a big step for me and a nice reminder of how proud I feel wearing the kit and being in that team environment,” beamed the Welshman after helping the host nation to a top-three finish in the inaugural Athletics World Cup

Greene’s third place matched the feat of Beth Dobbin, who took 200m bronze on her GB debut.

The Loughborough receptionist works four jobs to pay for her athletics career but showed no fear as she mixed it with far higher ranked sprinters.

“I had to pinch myself,” said the Scot. “It’s like a dream come true. Those girls ahead of me are second and fourth in the world this year – I’m something like 51st.”

Britain’s 4 x 100m women recorded the host nation’s only victory on the second day to follow wins by Lorraine Ugen (long jump) and Holly Bradshaw (pole vault) on Saturday.
