MPs have failed us with chaotic Brexit

- FIONA PARKER Edited by

THE chaos we are seeing on a daily basis caused by Brexit can all be attributed to one person – David Cameron. The referendum was supposed to settle the constant infighting in the Tory Party and he was certain Remain would win, so didn’t put enough effort into stating his case or campaigning. Then he just walked away after the result.

Why doesn’t he get the vilification constantly given to Tony Blair? He may not have sent anyone to fight in a war, but the referendum has caused families to fight among themselves, the country to be divided, the SNP to think a second independence vote would go their way, the question of the Irish border and so on.

In fact, it’s created so many problems we can’t move on. Cameron should be called to account for bringing the country to this state.

The so-called agreement made by the Cabinet betrayed what the electorate voted for in the referendum and it shows us that the Government has been lying to us for the past 24 months. Unfortunately, the majority of MPs will accept it as long as they can continue in their positions with good benefits. The only way for this to be remedied before the next general election is if 48 plus Conservative MPs send in their letters of ‘no confidence’ in the Prime Minister to trigger a leadership election. But will they have the moral fibre to do it? It’s time to take decisions about Brexit away from MPs.

I’m angry at the politicians. Brexit should have been undertaken by representatives from all parties, not just the Tories. Politicians should be ashamed and when a Prime Minister’s only argument is “back me or get a Labour Government”, you realise how devoid of ideas she is.

It’s time the people spoke and told the politicians to get their act together and bring this country back from the brink.

David Cameron led this country into the biggest mess in history and should be brought to book, not let out to graze on his millions.

If anyone has been stabbed in the back it is the British by Mrs May and the Anglo-Brussels establishment.

What really is shameful is the timidity of our Government in the face of EU threats and the way in which anti-democratic agitators have been allowed to dictate the agenda and thwart the deliberately expressed will of the electorate.

M R Maloney, North London

A hard Brexit would be disastrous. There has to be a compromise and the only people not to see this are ministers who put their ambition before the interests of the country.

The public should remember two things. Firstly, so far we haven’t heard the Brexiteers putting forward any viable solutions. And secondly, those same ministers were not exactly honest during the referendum.

J Barker, Manchester

In 2016, David Cameron gave the public a clear choice. We voted to come out of the EU and it’s now time to stop squabbling and sort it. There must be no compromises or it will be a betrayal of democracy.
