“He didn’t have a good enough World Cup to be chosen for a match in front of Vardy, Welbeck and Rashford – people with probably better conditions from a physical and psychological point of view to start the game.”

The Manchester City player’s performances in Russia divided opinion, but Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate backed him completely and made him an automatic pick.

Mourinho claimed England were better in the third place play-off against Belgium after Sterling was substituted at the interval.

He added: “They made changes that improved the team. The team was more dynamic in the second half.”
