POTS of toy slime have been found to contain more than four times the permitted level of a chemical that can cause sickness, experts warn.

Eight out of 11 tubs had excessive boron, used to make the playground craze sticky, a Which? probe found.

The consumer watchdog warned parents that slime with high levels of boron can cause diarrhoea, vomiting skin irritation and cramps and even harm a pregnant woman’s unborn baby.

Nikki Stopford, of Which?, said: “Parents should have peace of mind that these toys are safe, so they’ll be shocked to find that the health of their children could be put at risk by these slimes.”

EU regulations limit boron to 300mg per kilogram. Toysmith Pink Jupiter Juice had the highest level of those tested at 1,400mg/kg; more than four times the limit. It was followed by CCINEE Pink Fluffy Slime (1,000mg/kg), Cosoro Dodolu Pink Crystal Slime Magic Clay (980mg/kg) and Baker Ross Green Mini Bucket Putty (930mg/kg).

Those which failed the safety test were widely available on Amazon. Some even had CE safety marks, Which? said.

The watchdog has passed its dossier to the Office for Product Safety and Standards and called for “fundamental changes to the product safety system”.

Amazon yesterday said it had axed the products deemed high in boron from its website, adding: “All sellers must follow our selling guidelines, those who don’t will be subject to action.”

Baker Ross has withdrawn its slime amid a probe. No one from US firm Toysmith or China’s CCINEE and Cosoro was available for comment yesterday.

The pots which passed the test were HGL Green Goopy Slime, Glam Goo Deluxe Pack (clear) and Planet Slime Shop Hulk Green Halloween Slime.
