May’s weak state exposed by Trump

- FIONA PARKER Edited by

By allowing herself to be bullied by the visiting President Trump, Theresa May has shown herself, once again, to be a weak Prime Minister. Trump’s comments about her, Boris and Brexit were out of order – it was interference, insolence and virtual blackmail directed at the elected leader of another country.

She should have refused to meet him. For those of us who are opposed to Brexit, the incident has only deepened fears of the world following a hard Brexit where an American president would call the shots. Quentin Deakin, Tywyn, Gwynedd Unsavoury dictators have visited here with less disturbance than the humiliating demonstrations against President Trump. I wonder how many demonstrators knew exactly what they were protesting about? At least Trump is keeping his word and trying to protect and create jobs for those who put faith in him at election time. It’s a pity our own MPs don’t show the same loyalty. The protests humiliated a democratically elected leader who at least offers us hope after Brexit, unlike President Obama who didn’t give two hoots about us. E Kirkaldy, Pontefract West Yorks The huge protests across the UK last week against Donald Trump and all that he stands for were commendable, but wouldn’t it be wonderful if that many people took to the streets to protest about our own shambles of a Government with its unnecessary austerity, DWP cruelty, dismantling of the NHS, the Brexit disaster and so on. You never know, it could make a difference. Martin Ketley, Billericay, Essex

Whether you like or dislike Donald Trump and his policies, he has always believed that America is for Americans and that they should come first. Theresa May has sold out the country with the Chequers meeting.

This country went to the polls and voted to leave the EU. Mrs May has ignored the will of the people. Peter Simmons, Liverpool

Can somebody, preferably a political leader, please inform Donald Trump that he is the president of USA, not the emperor of China, president of Europe or the king of England. He should act like a president and not a bullying spoiled brat. As for his visit here, I think ignoring him would have been a better way to protest. Arthur Wood, Leeds Donald Trump isn’t my cup of tea as a person nor as a president, but we really should start looking at some of our own MPs and their shortcomings before criticising Trump and his. Rob Wildey, Tamworth Staffs Is it any wonder Donald Trump likes Boris Johnson? Boris is a blond- haired buffoon the same as him. Neither of them know what diplomacy is, nor how to apply it. And to think Johnson has the benefit of an Eton education. George Sargeson, Hull
