Justin time for top spot

- BY JAMES NURSEY

JUSTIN ROSE aims to become world No.1 in style this week by lifting the Claret Jug.

The Englishman (above) is No.3 in the world but is targeting top spot with an Open win in Carnoustie.

He claims his game has never been more consistent after working on swing changes following a back injury and honing his putting.

The extra work has seen Rose record six top-10 finishes in 13 events in 2018.

Now Rose, winner of the US Open in 2013, is aiming to be king of Carnoustie.

The 37-year-old said: “I want to get to world No.1 by winning golf tournaments. I could possibly get there by finishing seventh somewhere but I want to get to world No.1 by winning.

“I want to win The Open. My game should perform in the Majors coming up.”

Rose is behind No.1 Dustin Johnson and Justin Thomas in the world rankings.

But he feels ready to claim an Open title 20 years on from his teenage debut as an amateur at Royal Birkdale.

Rose reflected: “It was a Cinderella story. I couldn’t think of a better time to bring everything full circle.

“If you could, you would lift the Claret Jug any year but 20 years has a nice ring to it.”
