Hot weather set to push price of greens up by 25%

THE heatwave has caused a shortage of broccoli, lettuce and watercress – which could push prices up by 25%.

Purchasing company Beacon said high temperatur­es had wreaked havoc with crops.

Managing director Paul Connelly said: “Although Brits might be enjoying the hot weather, our fresh produce definitely is not.”

Cauliflowe­r could also be hit as the scorching summer continues. And the heat and lack of water is affecting pea pods.

Stephen Francis, of frozen supplier Fen Peas said: “All of our locations are harvesting below average. If we have rainfall now it wouldn’t be able to reverse the effects.”

In another blow for shoppers, dairy giant Arla said cheese and butter could be “luxuries” if we leave the EU with no trade deal.
