Taking our Lucy’s Law fight to the lawmakers

-

It was a privilege last week to address members of the Welsh Assembly and supporters of our Lucy’s Law campaign to end the horrors of large-scale commercial puppy farming.

The event at the Senedd was organised by the charity Cariad – it means “love” in Welsh and stands for Care and Respect Includes All Dogs – and sponsored by Eluned Morgan, the Labour Assembly Member for Mid and West Wales.

“There are dogs up and down this land who are being treated with immense cruelty, having to breed litter after litter in order to satisfy the profit motive of people who have no care for these dogs,” she said.

“At the end of their useful lives they are discarded in dreadful conditions without any thought for their health or welfare. The purpose of today is to ask for your support to end the dreadful practice of puppy farming and support Lucy’s Law.” Lucy’s Law campaigner founder, vet Marc Abraham, said: “Puppy farming in Wales began about 30 years ago and it’s still flourishing. “Today is a golden opportunity to end this shame.” Most UK puppy farms are concentrated in West Wales and I told the audience how every one of those contacted by the Mirror had refused to let journalists inside their buildings. “As the headline on the resulting story read: What do they have to hide?” I said. Lucy’s Law will ban the sale of puppies by pet shops and other third party dealers. By doing this, it will sever the route to market used by the commercial puppy breeders.
