-

The World Cup proved an own goal for the high street, with sales falling 0.5% last month.

The early stages of the tournament – plus the scorching weather – boosted sales of supermarket food and drink.

But other stores suffered as shoppers stayed at home.

Yesterday’s Office for National Statistics figures did not include’s England’s later World Cup games.

And while last month was a struggle, retail sales between April and June were up 2.1% – the biggest quarterly rise for 14 years.
