RAHM CUTS UP ROUGH AFTER EXIT
JON RAHM threw a club in frustration as the world No.5 suffered a shocking meltdown to miss the cut at The Open.
The Spaniard opened with a 69 and made two birdies in his first three holes in his second round.
But Rahm (above) took a triplebogey seven at the 7th when he drove out of bounds – and then carded a bogey and a double bogey to drop six shots in three holes before the turn.
He made another double bogey at 16 on his way to a 78 and said: “What stings me more is knowing I missed the last two cuts at the last two Majors after how good I played at Augusta. I need to reflect on what happened.
“Right now, I’m not in any mental state to think about what happens. We have six really important events coming up. Hopefully, I can get my game straight again and get myself in contention again.”
Also out was Jhonattan Vegas, who arrived by helicopter for the first round after a visa mix-up and played with borrowed clubs. He followed his opening 76 with a 74.
Ian Poulter (circle bottom) shot a second round 81, while fellow Ryder Cup hopefuls Russell Knox (73) and Matt Fitzpatrick (75) also missed the weekend. Former captain Darren Clarke finished last on 21-over par after his 82.
Padraig Harrington (circle middle) and Sergio Garcia (circle top) were reunited – this time in both missing the cut. The Irishman beat the Spaniard in a dramatic play-off in 2007 after finishing tied on seven-under par.
Harrington, who followed his opening 76 with a 74, said: “I definitely seemed to run out of steam both days.”
