Labour anger at Brexit vote ‘dishonesty’

- BY MIKEY SMITH Political Reporter

THE Tories undermined public trust by plotting to “steal votes” from opposition MPs, Labour claims.

Chief Whip Julian Smith and Tory chairman Brandon Lewis are accused of telling five Tory MPs to break pairing agreements — a centuries old code of honour — to avoid a defeat for the Government in Tuesday’s Brexit vote.

Mr Lewis, paired with Lib Dem Jo Swinson who is on maternity leave, was the only MP to break a pair and Theresa May insists it was “an honest mistake”.

But deputy Labour Leader Tom Watson said that the PM was guilty of “blatantly untrue excuses”.

He added: “People expect candour and decency not cowardice and dishonesty.”
