Cable: I was wrong to miss vote
SIR Vince Cable admits he “got it wrong” by missing last week’s crucial Brexit vote.
The Lib Dem leader confirmed he was at a “confidential private dinner” instead.
Reports suggested he was in talks to start a new centrist anti-Brexit party. He refused to confirm that but added: “In the longerterm there may be a re-alignment because of the deep splits in the parties and I want my party to be at the centre of it.”
Cable missed two knife-edge Customs Bill votes. After amendments tabled by Eurosceptic Tory MPs were accepted, 14 pro-EU Tories voted against. With Labour also voting against, the Government scraped home in two votes by a margin of three.
