50% surge in dumped pets

THE number of animals dumped at rescue centres has surged by up to 50% as holiday season arrives.

Many are handed over simply because owners do not want to arrange and pay for care while away.

The Dogs Trust took in 152 in one day this month. A spokeswoman said: “We often see an increase in the run-up to the holidays.”

Teresa Cargill of Phoenix French Bulldog Rescue added: “We had one person say, ‘We need him gone because we’re on holiday on Monday’.”
