Today’s picture from our archives shows American playwright Tennessee Williams in London.

Known for his dark dramas, such as A Streetcar Named Desire and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, many of his plays were made into films. Marlon Brando and Vivien Leigh starred in the film version of Streetcar in 1951.

The playwright, who died in 1983, travelled constantly, claiming he needed to experience new places to stimulate his writing.
