‘Rescue bid’ for sex shame MP
TORY party officials will join a local party meeting to decide the future of sex texts scandal MP Andrew Griffiths – fuelling suspicions they want to persuade angry activists to keep him on.
Married Mr Griffiths, MP for Burton and Uttoxeter, lost his ministerial role and the Tory whip after the Sunday Mirror revealed he bombarded two barmaids with 2,000 explicit texts.
It also emerged he was reported to police, accused of harassing a former girlfriend he allegedly cheated on.
But the PM’s position in the Commons is so shaky she needs every vote she can get. Local activists received an email on Friday night from Conor Wileman, chair of East Staffordshire Conservative Association, asking them to attend a special general meeting on August 6.
“The only business at this meeting is as follows: The conduct of Andrew Griffiths MP,” he wrote. “CCHQ representatives will be present.”
