New goal for golden boy Harry
HARRY KANE is bidding to add the FIFA player of the year award to his World Cup Golden Boot.
The Tottenham and England striker, who scored six times in the Three Lions’ run to the semi-finals in Russia, has been named on the 10-man shortlist for the prestigious ‘Best FIFA Men’s Player’ prize.
And Gareth Southgate’s role in restoring England’s fortunes in a major tournament has been rewarded by inclusion on the manager’s shortlist.
Cristiano Ronaldo will be bidding to defend his trophy having made a stunning start to the year with Real Madrid before moving to Juventus in a £88million switch earlier this month.
The award was launched in 2016 with the Portuguese star twice seeing off competition from long-time rival Lionel Messi. Neymar was third last year, but the Paris Saint-Germain forward misses out this time after a disappointing first campaign in the French capital.
Kevin De Bruyne, Antoine Griezmann, Eden Hazard, Kylian Mbappe, Luka Modric, Mohamed Salah and Raphael Varane make up the rest of the list.
Premier League bosses Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp have been named as the nominees for the best men’s coach. The awards ceremony will take place in London on September 24.
Didier Deschamps joins them after lifting the World Cup with France.
Massimiliano Allegri (Juventus), Stanislav Cherchesov (Russia), Zlatko Dalic (Croatia), Roberto Martinez (Belgium), Diego Simeone (Atletico Madrid), Ernesto Valverde (Barcelona) and Zinedine Zidane (ex-Real Madrid) complete the line-up.
