Our picture shows triumphant Steve Ovett after clinching gold in the men’s 800 metres in the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow. Ovett was only sixth at the halfway mark, but pushed through the pack to second place before overtaking team mate and rival Seb Coe 70 metres from the finish line. The US, Germany and China had boycotted the Moscow Games in protest against the Soviet Union’s invasion of Afghanistan in 1979.
