Pav’s goal is Worldie

AARON RAMSEY sought the shade of a sight screen at Singapore Cricket Club as the 70 per cent humidity ramped up the heat on a 31-degree day.

BENJAMIN PAVARD’S stunning strike for France has been named by FIFA as the best goal at the World Cup in Russia.

Right-back Pavard blasted the unstoppable shot from outside the area in the compelling last-16 clash against Argentina.

It levelled the scores at 2-2 before France eventually won 4-3.

They went on to lift the trophy, with further victories over Uruguay, Belgium and Croatia.

Speaking about his goal, Pavard said: “The ball bounced up as it came to me – I didn’t even think about it. I just tried to get over it and keep it down.

“I was trying to hit it in the direction it came from, which is what the strikers always tell me.

“I didn’t think it over and when it went in, I just felt so happy.”

The Stuttgart defender’s strike beat Juan Quintero’s low free-kick for Colombia against Japan in the group stage into second.

And Luka Modric’s longrange stunner against Argentina – also in the group stage – came third in the voting.
